Build Your Portfolio with After-School Studios
After-School Studios is a dynamic program for students in grades 9–12, offering a variety of classes in both fine art and design. Through weekly studio sessions, participants hone their skills, develop inventive and expressive portfolios, and prepare for college or the next step in their creative academic journey. Discover new techniques, connect with fellow young artists, and take your creativity to the next level.
Schedule: October 14 – December 18, 2025 (No classes November 27)

Cost: $555 per class

The After-School Studios program offers insight into building a portfolio for higher education and the art school admissions process through a presentation with Admissions during the semester. One-on-one portfolio reviews with an Admissions Counselor are encouraged as well. Prior experience is not necessary. Students from a variety of artistic backgrounds are welcome.
To improve accessibility, After-School Studios includes a virtual class option. To participate, students will need access to a computer, laptop, or smartphone with video/camera capabilities, and a reliable internet connection.
Every studio will utilize Zoom for virtual meetings. Other applications and online web resources, such as Google Classroom and Discord, may be used to organize assignments and other class content at the instructor’s discretion.
Online studio offerings may include:
- Live presentations from faculty and check-ins each class
- Time for creative art making, both independently and in class
- Break out sessions in small groups
- One-on-one and group critiques with faculty
- Online resources such as virtual museum tours, TED Talks, external demo videos, “visiting” artists, virtual collaborations, etc.
After-School Studios classes are capped at 12.

Youth Programs are delighted to bring back after school studios to the campus. Students attending an in-person class will have a short Orientation on the first day of classes that will help them acclimate to the 91 campus.
Students will receive a 91 ID on the first day which will give them campus access during their class periods.
After-School Studios classes are capped at 12.

Meeting Day: Tuesdays (Online)
Time: Weekly from 4:30 – 6:30PM
Students will experiment with traditional and digital animation techniques while they explore the possibilities of this diverse and contemporary medium. Students gain a solid foundation in animated storytelling, resulting in unique and outstanding pieces for a college portfolio.
Cost: $555
Supplies are not included in the program fee and are purchased by the participant. A supply list will be emailed to participants two weeks before the start of the program.

This class offers students a unique opportunity to strengthen observational drawing skills and cultivate a personal point of view. Students explore traditional and innovative ways of rendering the observed world through a variety of styles and media.
Cost: $540
Supplies are not included in the program fee and are purchased by the participant. A supply list will be emailed to participants two weeks before the start of the program.

Step into the world of digital photography and image editing in this dynamic 9-week after-school studio for students in grades 9–12. Through hands-on instruction, students will explore the fundamentals of photography—composition, lighting, depth of field, shutter speed, and ISO—while developing their own creative voice behind the lens.
Each week, students will explore photography through visual experiments, creative assignments, and guided editing sessions using Adobe Photoshop. By the end of the course, students will have built a personal portfolio of original images and gained practical skills in both photography and digital editing. Ideal for beginners or those looking to strengthen their foundation, this course encourages creativity, technical growth, and visual storytelling.

Time: Weekly from 4:00PM – 6:00PM.
Re-invent a garment you own: explore sewing techniques and basic pattern making to deconstruct, alter, or combine garments into one-of-a-kind fashion pieces. This hands-on studio class will focus on fashion illustration, sustainability, and reusing garments to give them a new life.

Time: Weekly from 4:00PM – 6:00PM.
In this class, students will experiment with materials and processes while exploring the many ways artists communicate ideas and create images. Students will draw inspiration from contemporary mixed media artists as they work to develop their own styles and perspectives.

Explore the multi-faceted field of illustration. In this class, students learn about effective tools and techniques for visual communication. Areas of study may include concept art, character design, editorial, and narrative illustration. Students are exposed to the wide range of styles and mediums used by professional illustrators.

Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served and space available basis. Submission of a registration form does not guarantee enrollment in a class. If you submit a registration form and your preferred classes are full, you will be placed on the waiting list and notified as soon as possible if a space becomes available.
Scholarships are based on financial need and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Please indicate on your registration form if you would like to request a scholarship. To be considered, you will be asked to provide family financial information on the registration form (required).
91 reserves the right to cancel classes in the event of an insufficient number of registrations. Students will receive a full refund in the event that a class is canceled for this reason. Classes with low enrollment will be canceled at least two weeks before the start of the program.
Students will receive a full refund for classes dropped by September 30th. Students who fail to notify 91 Youth Programs of their registration cancellation in writing to k12@massart.edu prior to this date, will not be eligible for a refund.
Failure to pay the class fee by the payment deadline does not withdraw a student from the program. Students who do not pay the class fee, and who do not attend the class will still have the class fee charged to their student account. Withdrawal from the program is only accepted via writing to k12@massart.edu by the September 30th deadline.
